COMICS CULTURE SHRAPNEL from CBEM 372
I've been busy with school stuff at first (am now graduated, yay!), then the Star Wars Line, then *more* Star Wars stuff, personal relationships, and now Shoujocon stuff. Everything's over with except Shoujocon, which I'll address now. We still looking for staff, so if anyone feels like pitching in as we enter "Crunch Time" please do. I don't think the free admission offer stands anymore, but there are other goodies to be had, and the experience looks good on a resume. We've had a lot of flake-outs, people quitting because they didn't really realize how much work they would have to do, people who don't think twice about dumping their workload into the arms of an already overworked supervisor or staffer. I find it really unprofessional and rude, as well as bloody annoying. So if you're a little more mature, a little more stick-to-it, I welcome you to join. Even if you are a little flaky, it's ok, I think we still need security at the con, which mostly requires bossing people around. Head over to www.shoujocon.com and check under "staff." Heck, head over there anyway, because Shoujocon is a lot of fun, and remember that people work hard to make it that way.
I've had this theme thrown at me a lot over on the Star Wars end too, working hard to make things work out. A lot of the problems over there have arisen from people simply not conducting themselves well. Petty gossip, irresponsibility, and then just acting stupid in public. You know what I mean by stupid - acting a little too geeky. It's ok to be a geek, but there's a certain limit that even other geeks can't stand. I know some people are like that naturally, but then there are points when people are just being stupid.
Like one of the favorite things for the media to do when talking about Star Wars geeks is set up a rivalry. Usually they go for the whole Star Wars vs. Star Trek thing, but this year tried a new angle (especially with the lack of a strong Trek presence): Star Wars vs. Spider-Man.
I can't think of anything stupider. They're both good movies, yes, I have my problems with both. But I enjoyed both of them to about the same degree, and don't see any reason to compare. Especially since geeks see everything eventually and usually more than once. I suppose the comparison wouldn't be so bad if there weren't so many geeks eager to feed into it. SW fans who said Spidey sucked, comic book geeks who said that SW is overrated. The fight scenes in Spidey were wooden. The dialogue in SW was wooden. This is ridiculous.
So it is my personal plea for all of you people to just stop. Give it up. It's pointless. There will be another Star Wars movie, there will be another Spider-Man movie. Oh, and there will be another Indiana Jones, and Austin Powers, and MIB2, and the Powerpuff Girls movie coming too. And I know you're going to see all of them. So just shut up and eat your popcorn.
